Ambulance
Bellefonte EMS has been providing quality ambulance
service to the community for over 62 years and today
operates 3 PaDOH licensed Basic Life Support (BLS)
ambulances. At least 1 ambulance is staffed at all
times with an in-house crew to provide an immediate
response to emergency 911 dispatches. Additional
units are staffed during peak times by in-house
crews or off-duty personnel. We also offer
non-emergency ambulance transports for patients with
a medical necessity between hospitals or other
healthcare institutions. We respond to nearly 2000
ambulance incidents annually, making us one of the
busiest EMS agencies in Centre County.
Bellefonte EMS has been an active participant in the
Pa Department of Health EMS Strike Team program
since its inception in 2001. EMS Strike Teams
respond on short notice to natural or man-made
disasters, usually deploying for 3 to 10 days at a
time, to assist local EMS agencies that are disabled
or overwhelmed due to the disaster conditions. A
typical response includes an ambulance with a 4
person crew of EMT’s that rotate shifts in order to
operate 24 hours per day, often in austere
conditions. Previous deployments of the Bellefonte
EMS team or assets have included; New Orleans after
Hurricane Katrina (2005), Wilkes-Barre flooding
(2006), and the New Jersey coast after Hurricane Lee
(2011).
Para-Transit
Van
Bellefonte EMS currently has 3 Para-Transit vans,
licensed by the PUC, that provide non-emergency
transportation for both wheelchair or litter
patients that are not in need of medical evaluation,
monitoring or treatment during transportation. This
service provides cost-effective transportation to
persons that do not need an ambulance but need
assistance, uses a wheelchair, or are unable to sit
and need a litter. Our para-transit vans are used
for scheduled doctor’s appointments, rehab therapy
or outpatient appointments, or when discharged from
the hospital.
Special Event
Standbys
For many years Bellefonte EMS has provided an
ambulance for medical support at home football games
with Bellefonte School District, Bald Eagle School
District and at Beaver Stadium for Penn State
University. We are also active in the community by
providing medical support and EMS coverage at other
sporting events such as lacrosse, charity
walks/runs/bike rides, karate tournaments, YMCA
polar bear plunge, Special Olympics floor hockey,
and other large community events.
EMS
Bike Team
Large community events can present a public health
challenge where emergency access for an ambulance
may be delayed due to crowds of people or closed
streets. Our experienced EMT’s ride professional
grade bicycles carrying medical equipment, including
an AED and oxygen, to quickly reach a patient and
begin treatment until the ambulance arrives moments
later. These EMT’s receive specialized training and
must pass riding tests in order to be on this unique
EMS response team.
